Inaugural Initiates April 8, 1972
The Beta Omega chapter of Theta Xi Fraternity has a rich history.
The best memories of the Theta Xi Fraternity at Virginia Tech say we began in December of 1965 as an idea by 5 guys who were friends from the Corp of Cadets at Virginia Tech. They named themselves Tau Beta Upsilon (TBU). Fraternities were starting to enter the Virginia Tech community as more students were attending VT during a major growth phase. These “5 Founders” quickly recruited “4 Charter” brothers, to be followed by “2 Probationary” brothers. These 11 formed the foundation of the first year of the fraternity. From December 1965 thru March 1972 “82 brothers” were initiated into TBU, a single chapter local fraternity at VT. During this first 6+ years, meetings and social gathering were held in apartments, trailers, rental cabins, a farmhouse, and ultimately by 1970 at a rental house at 448 Roanoke Street.
The large growth in students at VT during this period prompted the University to finally sanction the growing number of student fraternal organizations. Beginning in 1970, TBU approached several national fraternities about affiliation. This culminated on April 8, 1972 with TBU affiliating with the National Fraternity Theta Xi (TX) when 28 of the original 82 TBU members were initiated into Theta Xi to form the Omega Chapter of Theta Xi at Virginia Tech . Over time, 43 of the 82 original TBU’s also became dual members of TX.
Over the 55 year history of Theta Xi at Virginia Tech, 645 Beta Omega Brothers have enjoyed the lifelong brotherhood of the Theta Xi experience.

National Fraternity history
Theta Xi Fraternity was founded at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York, on April 29, 1864, by Peter Henry Fox, Ralph Gooding Packard, Christopher Champlin Waite, George Bradford Brainerd, Samuel Buel Jr., Henry Harrison Farnum, Thomas Cole Raymond, and Nathaniel Henry Starbuck. Minutes of the original meeting, Constitution and Ritual have been preserved by the Fraternity to this day. Our tradition is truly continuous.
On August 20, 1962, twenty-one chapters of Kappa Sigma Kappa located at accredited schools were received into the Bonds of Theta Xi. Each of these chapters received a Greek-letter designation prefaced by Kappa. Seven chapters, which were ineligible to come into Theta Xi because they were located on unaccredited campuses, reorganized their national structure and continued under the name Kappa Sigma Kappa.
